How has your Hood education benefited you?

My Hood education gave me the foundation to go to dental school. My liberal arts education helps me to understand and deal with many aspects of everyday life.

How did your time at Hood prepare you for the future?

It not only allowed me to gain entrance into dental school, but I was able to excel in dental school. I have Hood’s dedicated teachers to thank for that.

What were your extracurricular experiences?

Hood was predominantly a woman’s college when I attended so there was little opportunity in the way of sports for men. Mixers and coffee house were fun social activities.

Did you decide your major right away?

I knew I wanted to go into medicine or dentistry. I had an interest in chemistry and later my adviser suggested I double major in math and chemistry since I was already taking a lot of math courses anyway.

What is your favorite memory of Hood?

My most memorable experience at Hood was preparing my senior research project, which included pulling an all-nighter in the chemistry lab during a very long lab session. An instructor was kind enough to bring me a meal so I didn’t pass out. My presentation was well received by the faculty, making the hard work worthwhile. I didn’t know it at the time but it was great preparation for dental school.

Who were your mentors at Hood?

Professor Sharron Smith was my senior project adviser. She gave very helpful guidance during my efforts as a novice researcher.

What is your opinion on the value of a Hood education?

It did what it was suppose to do for me. It prepared me not only to survive, but thrive in dental school academically.

What is your opinion on the value of a liberal arts education?

With the cost of college rising every year, many are considering a more focused vocational or technical training. I believe if you can swing it financially, a broader liberal arts education prepares you better for whatever life may throw your way.

What would you say to students applying to Hood?

It was a very positive experience. Being a local day student made attending very convenient and affordable. A school can offer many great things but it is up to the student to take advantage of the opportunities and turn the experience into something memorable.

What role has Hood College education played in your career?

My dental degree has blessed me with a more than comfortable lifestyle, provide for and educated my children, helped me to give back to the community and serve our patient’s dental needs. A Hood education was the starting point.

Why did you choose to attend Hood College?

It was a choice by circumstance. I needed to stay local and help my parents with their business so Hood was the convenient and logical choice. Sometimes you get lucky and find a gem!
